The EU Treaty

Gordon Brown, with the keen connivance of Conservatives and Lib Dems, is set to ratify the new EU treaty on our behalf in February. He says it is quite unlike the old discredited Constitution which was held up by the NO votes ion France and Holland. Our EU masters have made it clear to politicians that there shall be no more referenda, as they realise that voters don't want their votes rendered useless because our laws will be made by the unelected Commissioners in Brussels. Angela Merkel recently made two visits to Downing Street to make sure that Gordon toes her line.

So - is the new treaty any different from the old Constitution? Let's leave the answer to one of the Commissioners in person. "It's essentially the same proposal as the old Constitution" ( EU Commissioner Margot Walstrom quoted in Svenska Dagbladet  26th June 2007). Oh, and Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato let the cat out of the bag when he said (at the London School of Economics on 20th February 2007)  that the idea was " to change the name but not the substance of the Constitutional text. The good thing about not calling it a Constitution is that no one can ask for a referendum on it ".
